“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.” – Confucius
I am often asked to describe what career coaching EXACTLY is. As us coaches know, coaching is not really a concept to be explained, rather something to be experienced. However, from the many explanations and elevator pitches I tried, here is what seems to “stick” the best:
A career coach is simply somebody who supports you in identifying the overlap between those 3 circles:
- What you want to do – skills motivators, aspirations and fields of interest
- What you can do – see past achievements, competencies and transferable skills
- What the job market needs – see current skills gap
So, don’t hesitate the continue the conversation with potential clients by asking:
- Do you know what you really really want?
- Do you know what unique set of strengths and skills you bring?
- Do you know what skills gap companies want to fill?
- If you knew the first 2 answers, how easier would it be to answer to the 3rd one?
To making our work easy to explain!
